Edit: Philips has released a newer model of these headphones, the Philips X2/27 Fidelio Premium Headphones. We’ll be reviewing them soon.
We haven’t yet reviewed any Philips headphones here on Headphone Reviews HQ, but we’ve picked some great ones to start out with – the Philips Fidelio X1/28 premium over-ear headphones. Featuring powerful 50-millimeter drivers and open-back architecture, the Fidelio X1 is designed to provide natural sound that is detailed and precise.
These headphones offer an audio experience that would rival even higher-end competitors. We know there are more neutral, analytic, detailed and pricier headphones, but for this price range we have not heard anything close to this model.
The sound on the Phillips Fidelio X1/28 headphones is clean and energetic, yet bassy as well. By nature, open backed headphones tend to lose much of their bass sound due to their design, but the wizards over at Philips have somehow managed to give these a full and lively bass sound comparable to that of closed back headphones. The sound of the X1 can be described as versatile – it can present high quality sound to almost any kind of media, and present it well. The bass is phenomenal in both movies and games.
The mid-range is lush, and for technical pieces (such as an orchestral recordings) it beautifully delivers the lows and highs as well. The sound is precise – we could tell which instrument is placed where, and it all comes together harmoniously. These headphones are also very comfortable to wear. The hammock style strap gives you one of the most comfortable headphone experiences you’ll ever have. It really feels just like a soft rubber band sitting on the top of your head, and after a few minutes you’ll forget you’re wearing them at all. They are comfortable and light – great for longer periods of music listening, movie watching, or game playing (whatever floats your boat).
The build is top-notch, and is what we’d expect to find in a much higher priced set of headphones. However, they are quite large, so we wouldn’t recommend them as a pair if you’re looking for something more portable. The ear cups are pretty large due to the 50mm drivers and are extremely comfortable while you’re wearing them. They don’t have a bling factor that some folks are looking for in a new pair of headphones, but if you don’t mind that you’ll be rewarded with some incredible sounding headphones.
Overall, the Phillips Fidelio X1 should be on your list if you’re searching for premium headphones with a large sound stage, clear mid-tones, and added bass response.
